Partners: Vodafone and multiple local and national bodies
Aims: To generate a new source of rainfall data in the region and a radical breakthrough in environmental monitoring to improve weather ‘nowcasting’, forecasting and flood response.
What we did: Through using Vodafone’s network of masts in the region as a new source of rainfall data, this was integrated with the region’s weather monitoring systems to provide enhanced data on ground surface moisture (rainfall). This generated real-time data to improve weather ‘nowcasting’, forecasting and response to extreme weather events.
What we hope to achieve: Significantly improve national forecasting and local nowcasting of weather systems, generating significantly improved flood prediction. The predicted impact of this is a reduction in flood-related damage costs of approximately £230 million.
