Smart Abstraction

Aims: To address the challenge of water scarcity and promote better water management across local farms, via access to detailed information on water availability.

What we Did: We deployed a network of wireless sensors across the Strine Internal Drainage Board (IDB) catchment to monitor river flows, reservoir storages, and rainfall in real-time. Giving local farmers live data on local water levels, and enabling them to regulate their water use around high- and low-flow events.

What we hope to achieve: Significantly reduced environmental impacts of farmland irrigation that reduced summer dependency and improved water storage during points of high flow. To also support farmer collaboration and become a significant driver for change in the region, promoting better awareness of water availability.
