Water Quality – Nutrient Monitoring

Partners: Shropshire Council, Southwest Sensor Ltd, River Clun Monitoring Group, Severn Rivers Trust, Shropshire Wildlife Trust & Environment Agency, Herefordshire Council & Herefordshire Wildlife Trust

Aims: To generate real time water quality data in the using wireless technology.  The project is seeking to demonstrate how remote monitoring can detect nutrients at an extreme level of granularity and offer a superior alternative to manual testing.

What we did: Phosphate and Nitrate Sensors have been installed to mirror the EA test site at Clun Bridge.  Silt traps, straddled by Phosphate sensors, are being deployed close to the Redlake to understand whether they can reduce pollution from highway run off.  Phosphate sensors are being deployed to the Lugg to assess the contribution to the river health from a combined sewer outlet.

What we hope to achieve: Demonstrate the benefits of wireless technology in providing a clear understanding of water quality to support natural assets within the region. It also has the potential to unlock much-needed small-scale developments, demonstrating that sustainability can be achieved alongside crucial development projects in the catchment area.
