The RSPAWIR has been working with Streetwave to generate a quality and accessible dataset to support individuals, communities and businesses across the region to make the right choice about network providers. This is of particular interest where the public cellular network connectivity is needed to power new Advanced Wireless Technology.
The data will also be used to support lobbying efforts to improve coverage across the region.
The survey is now complete having recorded the signal strength across the whole region along 20,000Km of the public road network.
The results have been revealing and show that across the region, c. 15% of postcode areas are unable to receive a signal from any of the 4 Mobile Network Operators at a strength that is likely to support a good quality voice call. It is worth stating that the transmission of data over the public networks requires a lower signal strength than voice calling. Therefore public cellular networks should not necessarily be dismissed as options to connect Advanced Wireless Technologies, even where voice calls cannot be supported.
